Umemoto & Listopad: Tattooed Charms Sawatdee - EXCLUSIVE | |||||||||
This is a book you wont find anywhere else but on Tattoo-Source. Even in the country of its origin (Thailand) it is not easy to obtain a copy. Thanks to articles in several magazines, as well as Michael McCabe's "Tattoos of Indochina", a larger audience has become aware of Thai Buddhist protection/good luck charm tattoos and their importance in its society. Some of you might also remem- ber the short article in Ed Hardy's "Tattootime 2: Tattoo Magic". In the publication reviewed here, you will find ca. 42 pages with sacred Thai Buddhist designs, plus ca. 74 photographs (colour and b/w) of them applied to human bodies. Other photographs include: Samoan, Maori, Old School and Borneo tattoos, Herbert Hoffmann, Fakir Mussafar, plus works by Horiyoshi III and Filip Leu. Click here to see some examples: Tattooed Charms. According to the back of the cover, this book was first published in the Thai year 2521 (= 1978), which - looking at the photos - seems to not be correct. Since it is now in its fourth printing, I do believe it is possible that this is an updated issue. Also the quality of the printing seems to be post-1978. It is, however, still not very high! The printing itself is totally acceptable, but the paper is rather thin. I do include this book in my "Flash" section also, because it can definitely be a source of inspiration for any working artist, but I have to warn you also: do not copy any of the magic designs represented here. I have been living in Thailand on and off, and can say that you would enter an area that is not to be taken lightly! These tattoos are not labelled "magic" just be- cause it sounds good. If you are interested, btw, to see Thai monks applying magic tattoos or even want to experience this ritual yourself: get in touch with me through the Contact Form - I can hook you up with the right people, or (if I'm in Thailand at the time of your trip) personally take you to a monastery. |
