Tribal tattoo is a term normally used to describe the
traditional tattoos of indigenous tribes / peoples from
places like Borneo, Samoa, Polynesia, Tahiti, Hawaii,
etc.
Like some people, I would also describe the traditio-
nal tattoos of the Ainu tribe (Japan) and the Buddhist
tattoos of Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, etc. as tribal.
Two very important characteristics of tribal tattoos
are, that they are traditionally tattooed in black only,
and executed with hand tools, not by tattoo mach-
ine. Unlike in Japan or the West, tribal tattoos are
normally done by more than one person: one person
(or several) stretch the skin, another person (in Sa-
moa sometimes several) ink the skin.
