Japanese Tattoos | |||||||||
Traditional Japanese tattoos have their origin in the world of the Edo (ancient name for present- day Tokyo) period (1603 - 1868) firefighters, but have of course gotten more into the spotlight in connection with organized crime (the Yakuza). Traditionally, the Japanese tattoo more or less the whole body, which is seen as one canvas. This is where it differs from Western tattoos. It also distinguishes itself by the background, which brings all the "main motifs" together, and is often the under-rated part of a Japanese bo- dysuit tattoo. There still are numerous traditional masters in Japan who tattoo by hand (tebori), but more and more modern-day artists are now exclusiv- ely using tattoo machines.
